Wrapped SOL, also known as wSOL, is a tokenized version of Solana's native cryptocurrency, SOL. It is designed to extend the utility and compatibility of SOL within the Solana ecosystem and across other blockchain networks. Native SOL is primarily used for paying transaction fees and rent on the Solana network. However, to interact with certain decentralized applications (dApps) and decentralized exchanges (DEXs) on Solana, SOL needs to be in a format compatible with the Solana Program Library (SPL) token standard. This is where Wrapped SOL comes in. Wrapped SOL allows native SOL to be treated like any other SPL token. This wrapping process involves depositing native SOL into a smart contract, and in return, an equivalent amount of wSOL is minted. The original SOL remains locked in the contract and can be retrieved by burning the corresponding wSOL. Beyond its use within Solana, Wrapped SOL also plays a role in cross-chain interoperability. In some instances, it functions as an ERC-20 token, a standard used on the Ethereum blockchain. This allows wSOL to be used within Ethereum's decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape, enabling users to bridge assets between Solana and Ethereum. The primary purpose of wSOL is to enhance the functionality of SOL, allowing it to participate in various DeFi activities such as yield farming, lending, and providing liquidity on platforms that require SPL tokens or cross-chain compatibility.
