Tezos (XTZ) is an open-source blockchain platform that supports peer-to-peer transactions and smart contracts. It was conceived in 2014 by Arthur and Kathleen Breitman, with its mainnet launching in September 2018. A core distinguishing feature of Tezos is its self-amending protocol and on-chain governance model. Unlike many other blockchains, Tezos is designed to upgrade itself without requiring a hard fork, which can split a blockchain into multiple incompatible versions. This self-amendment process allows the network to evolve and adopt new features through a formalized voting system where XTZ token holders can propose, evaluate, and approve changes to the protocol. This mechanism aims to avoid divisive splits within the community and ensure continuous network evolution. Tezos utilizes a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, specifically a variant called Liquid Proof-of-Stake (LPoS). In this system, transaction validation is performed by "bakers," who stake their XTZ tokens as collateral. Bakers are rewarded with XTZ tokens for their participation in validating transactions and adding new blocks to the blockchain. Holders of XTZ can also delegate their tokens to bakers to participate in the staking process and earn rewards. This PoS approach is known for being more energy-efficient compared to Proof-of-Work systems. The XTZ token is the native cryptocurrency of the Tezos platform. It serves multiple purposes within the network, including paying transaction fees, facilitating smart contract execution, and enabling participation in the governance process. Tezos supports decentralized applications (dApps), decentralized finance (DeFi), and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The platform also offers formal verification methods to enhance the security and correctness of smart contracts deployed on its blockchain.
