Tether (USDT) is a prominent cryptocurrency known as a stablecoin, launched by Tether Limited Inc. in 2014. Its primary purpose is to provide a less volatile digital asset by pegging its value to a traditional fiat currency, specifically the US dollar, at a 1:1 ratio. This means, in theory, one USDT token is equivalent to one US dollar. The creation of USDT aimed to offer a digital currency that mitigates the price fluctuations commonly associated with other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. It functions as a bridge between the traditional financial system and the cryptocurrency market, allowing users to move value without the significant volatility often found in crypto assets. Tether Limited also offers other stablecoins pegged to different fiat currencies, such as the Euro (EURT) and the Chinese Yuan (CNHT), and even gold (XAUT). Tether’s operational model involves issuing new tokens when equivalent fiat reserves are deposited and allowing redemption for fiat by integrated businesses. Transactions involving Tether are validated and secured by the underlying blockchain's protocol, such such as Proof of Work or Proof of Stake, depending on the network it is used on. The company employs a "Proof of Reserves" approach, indicating that their reserves are intended to be equal to or greater than the number of Tether in circulation.
