Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a stablecoin that is denominated in U.S. dollars. It is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, LLC, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ripple Labs. Each RLUSD is backed by an equivalent amount of U.S. dollars and other cash equivalents, such as cash deposits, U.S. Treasuries, and government money market funds. These reserves are held in segregated accounts. Ripple provides transparency by conducting monthly attestations of its reserves, performed by independent accounting firms. The primary purpose of RLUSD is to facilitate cross-border payments and provide reliable access to digital dollars. It is designed to offer a stable digital currency for various transactions and trading activities, and to support payments and settlements that require price stability. RLUSD can also be utilized for real-time payments, global stablecoin settlement, and as a way to bring traditional fiat currency onto the blockchain. RLUSD is natively issued on two prominent blockchains: the XRP Ledger and the Ethereum blockchain, where it exists as an ERC-20 token. The project operates under regulatory oversight and has received approvals from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) and the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), underscoring its commitment to compliance. RLUSD was officially launched in December 2024. It is important to distinguish RLUSD from XRP. While both are digital assets from Ripple, XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger, designed for fast and low-cost cross-border transactions with a market-determined value. In contrast, RLUSD is a regulated, U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin that aims to maintain a stable value tied to the U.S. dollar.
