The ORE project is a Web3 initiative built on the Solana blockchain, aiming to integrate proof-of-work (PoW) token mining principles, similar to Bitcoin, with Solana's high-speed and low-cost infrastructure. This project seeks to create a more accessible and equitable token distribution mechanism. Initially, ORE was launched in April 2024 as an experimental hackathon project by a pseudonymous developer known as Hardhat Chad. The first version (V1) aimed to allow anyone to mine ORE tokens using common devices like computers or smartphones, eliminating the need for specialized hardware typically associated with traditional PoW mining. It featured an algorithmic supply designed for constant linear growth, with one ORE token emitted approximately every minute. ORE V1 quickly gained popularity, leading to a significant increase in network activity, which at times caused congestion on the Solana network. Following challenges with V1, a redesigned version, ORE V2, was introduced in August 2024. ORE V2 evolved its mining system and is now described as a hybrid model that incorporates elements of both PoW and staking. This updated version uses a "gamified" system, sometimes referred to as a "5x5 grid," where participants can stake Solana (SOL) for a chance to earn ORE rewards. ORE V2 aims to be a decentralized store of value on Solana and has a fixed supply of 5 million tokens, differentiating from the earlier version's projected supply. The project emphasizes fair token distribution without pre-mines or insider allocations, with its smart contract being open-sourced and immutable.
