OPEN GPU (OGPU) is a Web3 project that operates as a global execution and routing layer for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). Its primary function is to facilitate the real-time movement of workloads across a distributed network of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The project aims to establish a decentralized GPU sharing economy, allowing centralized clouds, independent data centers, and individual GPU operators to contribute their resources as interchangeable execution targets within a single, global network. This approach seeks to democratize access to GPU computing resources and reduce reliance on centralized infrastructure, addressing issues of scalability and cost. OpenGPU operates its own purpose-built Layer 1 network, the OpenGPU Mainnet, which utilizes a Lachesis Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based consensus protocol. This blockchain infrastructure is specifically designed for tasks such as task allocation, validation, execution tracking, and settlement within the network. The native token of the ecosystem, OGPU, serves several utilities. It is used for settling task execution, coordinating the network, providing incentives for GPU providers, and ensuring the economic security of the routing layer. GPU providers receive OGPU tokens for completing computational tasks. Additionally, token holders have the option to stake their OGPU tokens to contribute to network security and participate in its governance. The architecture of the OpenGPU network consists of interconnected layers, including an infrastructure layer of physical GPUs, a blockchain layer for transparent and secure transactions, an application layer for submitting AI tasks and managing resources, and an orchestration layer with a scheduler to optimize performance. The project was founded in 2017 and initially utilized Ethereum blockchain technology for its oGPU token, with an ultimate goal to transition to its own custom Layer 1 blockchain for improved scalability and efficiency.
