Olympus v1 (OHM) is a Web3 project launched in March 2021 as a decentralized finance, or DeFi, protocol. It aims to establish OHM as a decentralized reserve currency, distinct from traditional stablecoins that are pegged to fiat currencies. Instead, OHM functions as a free-floating "flatcoin" that is backed by a treasury of various crypto assets. The Olympus protocol is governed by a Decentralized Autonomous Organization, or DAO, which means its operations and future development are controlled by its community through smart contracts and Olympus Improvement Proposals, or OIPs. The core of the Olympus system involves a treasury that holds a basket of assets such as DAI, FRAX, and liquidity provider, or LP, tokens. This treasury provides the backing for OHM. Two primary mechanisms drive the Olympus protocol: staking and bonding. Staking involves users locking their OHM tokens with the protocol to earn rewards, which helps to manage the circulating supply of OHM. Bonding, on the other hand, allows users to sell assets like stablecoins or LP tokens to the Olympus treasury in exchange for newly minted OHM at a discount. This process helps the protocol to accumulate more assets, thereby expanding its treasury and protocol-owned liquidity. OHM is an ERC-20 token built on the Ethereum blockchain. The project’s goal is to create a censorship-resistant and flexible digital money system with inherent value, aiming to provide a form of money that maintains purchasing power independently of centralized monetary policies.
