Multichain, formerly known as Anyswap, is a crypto project designed as a cross-chain router protocol to enable seamless token exchanges between different blockchain networks. It aims to increase interoperability among various blockchains, allowing users to move assets across networks effortlessly. The project began as Anyswap in July 2020 and rebranded to Multichain in October 2021. Multichain's technology utilizes smart contracts and liquidity pools to facilitate the bridging of tokens. For tokens that exist on multiple blockchains, Multichain uses liquidity pools for exchange. If a token is not yet present on a target blockchain, Multichain locks the original token in a smart contract and mints a wrapped version on the new chain, preserving the original token's value. The protocol supports a wide array of blockchains, including Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Fantom, and Harmony, with support for over 74 chains mentioned at one point. Its infrastructure is built to facilitate on-chain asset interoperability through cross-chain interactions, aiming to be a router for Web3. The project's network operates with Secure Multi Party Computation (SMPC) nodes. These nodes are run by various parties and work collectively to sign transactions, with each node generating a portion of the private key to prevent a single point of failure. Multichain offers services like cross-chain bridges and cross-chain routers to enable asset transfers. It also has a governance token, MULTI, intended to allow holders to participate in the project's governance mechanisms. Multichain has faced significant challenges, including disruptions to its operations following the arrest of its CEO in May 2023, which ultimately led to the cessation of the project. Despite these issues, the fundamental concept of multichain technology aims to address network congestion and high transaction fees by distributing traffic across multiple blockchains, enhancing asset utility, and expanding user access across different ecosystems.
