MoonDAO is a global decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) focused on democratizing access to space and establishing a self-sustaining, self-governing settlement on the Moon. The organization aims for this lunar base to serve as a launch point for humanity's exploration of the universe, with a goal to accelerate its construction by 2030. MoonDAO was officially launched in November 2021. The project believes that the future of space exploration should be accessible to everyone, irrespective of wealth, nationality, or government affiliations. To achieve its mission, MoonDAO utilizes a decentralized governance model, allowing its community members to collectively make decisions, manage projects, and contribute to space development. This model contrasts with traditional space exploration, which has historically been dominated by government agencies or private companies. The native governance token of MoonDAO is MOONEY. MOONEY is primarily used for decentralized community governance, granting its holders voting rights to direct the decisions made by MoonDAO. It is important to note that MOONEY is not intended as an investment tool for profit and does not represent fractionalized ownership of the DAO's assets. To participate in governance, MOONEY holders lock their tokens for a period of time to gain voting power, sometimes referred to as vMOONEY. The voting system employs a quadratic voting model, designed to ensure fair representation and discourage excessive influence from large stakeholders by weighing votes based on the square root of staked tokens. MoonDAO aims to fund space research and further human exploration of the unknown. The organization has outlined a roadmap that includes sending MoonDAO members to space, with one individual having already been sent. The MOONEY token has a fixed total supply of 2.6 billion, with no further issuance planned, and approximately 50 percent of tokens are held in the MoonDAO treasury to incentivize community participation in project development.
