The token 'LUNA' is primarily associated with the Terra blockchain project, although another project named 'Luna by Virtuals' also uses the LUNA ticker. The original Terra project was launched in 2018 by Terraform Labs with the goal of creating a decentralized, stable payment system. This system was built around algorithmic stablecoins, notably TerraUSD (UST), which aimed to maintain a peg to traditional fiat currencies. The native LUNA token played a crucial role in maintaining the stability of these stablecoins through a "burn and mint equilibrium" mechanism. LUNA holders could also stake their tokens to earn rewards and participate in the network's governance, voting on proposals and changes within the ecosystem. The Terra blockchain was built using the Cosmos SDK, enabling the development of various decentralized applications (DApps), including those for decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and Web3 applications. In May 2022, the original Terra blockchain experienced a significant event where its UST stablecoin lost its peg to the US dollar, leading to a substantial impact on the LUNA token. Following this event, a new blockchain was launched, often referred to as Terra 2.0 or simply Terra. This new chain operates without algorithmic stablecoins. The LUNA token on this relaunched network serves several core functions: staking to secure the network and earn rewards, participating in governance by voting on proposals, and paying for transaction fees and smart contract execution. Terra 2.0 continues to be a community-governed blockchain, utilizing a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism, and maintains its foundation on the Cosmos SDK for interoperability across different blockchain networks. This new iteration aims to rebuild the ecosystem by focusing on decentralized applications. Separately, 'Luna by Virtuals' is a Web3 project centered on an AI-powered virtual idol named Luna.
