LayerZero, with its associated token ZRO, is an omnichain interoperability protocol designed to facilitate seamless and secure communication and transactions across various blockchain networks. Its primary goal is to address the fragmentation within the blockchain ecosystem by enabling different blockchains to interact and share data as if they were a single, unified system. The protocol achieves this interoperability through a unique architecture centered on Ultra Light Nodes (ULNs), oracles, and relayers. ULNs are lightweight smart contracts deployed on each integrated blockchain, acting as endpoints for cross-chain messages. When a message needs to be sent from one chain to another, a user application selects an oracle, such as Chainlink, and a relayer. The oracle provides accurate data feeds, including block headers, while the relayer submits transaction proofs. Both the oracle and relayer operate independently, ensuring that no single entity has complete control over the message validation process, thereby enhancing security and trust. LayerZero supports over 70 mainnet blockchains, including major networks like Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon, and Solana, among others. This extensive integration allows for a wide range of cross-chain functionalities, such as bridging assets, sharing state information, enabling lending and borrowing, facilitating swaps, and supporting omnichain non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and governance. The ZRO token is the native governance token of the LayerZero protocol. It serves to incentivize participation and decision-making within the LayerZero ecosystem. Holders of ZRO tokens can vote on important changes and improvements to the protocol, pay for transaction fees, and engage in staking to contribute to the network's security. LayerZero Labs, the company behind the protocol, was co-founded by Bryan Pellegrino, Ryan Zarick, and Caleb Banister in 2021, with the protocol going live in March 2022.
