Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a decentralized, open-source blockchain platform that supports smart contract functionality. It originated from a significant event in the history of the Ethereum network. The story of Ethereum Classic begins with the original Ethereum blockchain, which launched in July 2015. In June 2016, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) built on the Ethereum platform was subjected to a hack, resulting in the theft of a large amount of Ether. The Ethereum community faced a critical decision: either to uphold the principle of "code is law" (meaning the blockchain's history should remain unalterable) or to reverse the hack to return the stolen funds. The majority of the Ethereum community, including its co-founder Vitalik Buterin, chose to implement a hard fork to reverse the transactions and restore the stolen funds. This new, altered chain became what is now known as Ethereum (ETH). However, a segment of the community adhered to the "code is law" philosophy, believing that the blockchain's immutability should be preserved even in the face of such an incident. This group continued to operate on the original, unaltered blockchain, which was subsequently named Ethereum Classic. As a blockchain platform, Ethereum Classic enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts, which are self-executing agreements with the terms directly written into code. It operates on a decentralized network of nodes and uses a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to validate transactions and add new blocks to the blockchain. This mechanism is similar to Bitcoin's, where miners solve complex computational problems. Transactions, once added, are designed to be immutable, meaning they cannot be modified or removed. Ethereum Classic places a strong emphasis on decentralization and immutability, maintaining the original Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and supporting a modified version of Nakamoto consensus. Following Ethereum's transition to a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism in 2022, Ethereum Classic remains a prominent smart contract platform secured by Proof-of-Work. The native token of the Ethereum Classic network is ETC. It is used to pay for "Gas," which represents the computational cost required to execute transactions and smart contracts on the platform.
