Ethereum is an open-source, decentralized blockchain platform with smart contract functionality. It was conceived in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin and launched on July 30, 2015. The platform's native cryptocurrency, Ether (ETH), powers the Ethereum network and is used to pay transaction fees, also known as "gas." Smart contracts are Turing-complete, meaning they can execute any program. It supports a wide range of applications, including decentralized finance (DeFi), which offers financial instruments without traditional intermediaries like banks. Other popular uses include the creation of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and fungible tokens (like ERC-20 tokens), decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), and various applications in gaming, identity management, and supply chain management. Many dApps, such as those in DeFi, can connect and interact to form complex financial services. In September 2022, Ethereum transitioned its consensus mechanism from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS) in an update known as "The Merge."
