Visa Crypto Labs has rolled out a command-line interface allowing AI agents to make secure, programmatic payments directly from the terminal.
"Excited to share Visa CLI, the first experimental product from Visa Crypto Labs," Head of Visa Crypto Labs Cuy Sheffield posted to X on Wednesday.
According to Visa's website, the tool will provide "programmatic card payments without the pain of API keys." In other words, users can supply bots, scripts, and other automated coding workflows with the ability to pay for web services without having to manage API keys or needing human interaction.
A CLI tool is a program that can be controlled entirely by typing text commands instead of clicking buttons, menus, or icons like in normal apps.
Released in beta, the Visa website prompts users to sign up using a GitHub account.
Visa is not alone in looking to create a way for AI agents to transact on the internet. Coinbase and Cloudflare are collaborating on the x402 protocol, while Stripe and Tempo just released the Machine Payments Protocol, both of which are looking to standardize AI-native payments.
In support of Tempo's mainnet on Wednesday, Visa announced it has integrated MPP to support card-based payments on its global network, noting its integration will "complement existing emerging agent payment standards, including protocols like x402."
"AI agents aren’t just answering questions. They're executing tasks, coordinating services, consuming APIs, purchasing compute and completing automated B2B workflows – including micropayments for API calls, cloud resources and machine-to-machine services from the command line," Visa wrote in a blog on Wednesday. "As agents become more capable, the payments infrastructure supporting them must also evolve to enable Command Line Commerce."
